CADE AWARD recipients

The AIC Award for Color in Art, Design and Environment (CADE) is established to recognize those who excel in the areas of design, art, architecture and humanities. The award is presented every two years, at AIC Congresses and Midterm Meetings. This award was established in 2015 and first given in 2017. The selection is an arduous procedure that includes nominations by AIC members and analysis of antecedents of the nominees by a Committee.


 Clino Trini Castelli (Italy)

2023 At the AIC Congress, Chiang Rai, Thailand. Clino Trini Castelli, throughout his entire career has developed the methodologies for color design. He has used the concept of meta-design in environmental and industrial design, developed through the introduction of tools such as CMF design and Design Primario. Among his main collaborations, we mention Cassina, Fiat, Hag, Lamborghini, Legrand, Louis Vuitton, Michelin, Olivetti, Somfy, and Vitra in Europe; AT&T, Herman Miller, Intek, Unisys, and 3M in the United States; Hitachi, Honda, JR-Nishi Nippon, Kyoei, Mitsubishi, Nakagawa Chemical, Toli, YKK Ap, and Itoki in Japan. From 1979 to 2011, he received seven prominent international awards in color and design, among which we mention: ADI Compasso d'Oro, IBD Gold Award, IF Product Design Gold Award, and Machine Design Awards. In parallel with his professional and research activities, he taught color design at the Politecnico di Milano and the Domus Academy from 1983 to 2020. As a result of his research and professional activity, he has written over 190 publications in journals, magazines, and books.

   Jean-Philippe Lenclos  (France)

2021 At the AIC Congress, Milan, Italy. Jean-Philippe Lenclos, colour designer, visual artist, colour researcher, Professor Emeritus of the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs (EnsAD), and founder and former director of Atelier 3D Couleur in Paris was awarded the Ordre des Arts et Lettres as a Chevalier by the French Ministry of Culture for his significant contributions to the arts. He developed a ground-breaking methodology, The Geography of Colour, and has given invited lectures worldwide. His books have received numerous prizes and have been translated into several languages. His works have been exhibited in various countries and 170 of his works are included in the Collection du Centre Pompidou in Paris. Jean-Philippe Lenclos has inspired several generations through his example, excellency, and seminal contributions to the world of colour in urban planning and design, environmental colour design, architecture, industry, product design, art, research, and education.

  Roy Osborne  (Great Britain)

2019 at the AIC Midterm Meeting, Buenos Aires, Argentina. Roy Osborne has sustained a deep interest in colour since studying art in 1966-70. He has contributed to some 20 books on colour, starting with 'Lights and Pigments' (1980). For 30 years he taught studio art, as well as presenting over 2,000 lectures at over 200 institutions worldwide. In 2003 he was awarded the Turner Medal of the Colour Group (Great Britain).

  Antal Nemcsics [1927-2019] (Hungary)

2017 at the AIC 13th Congress, Jeju, Korea.  PhD of Architectural Sciences and D.Sc. of Color Sciences. Chairman of the Hungarian National Color Committee (1969-2015). He obtained the International Giorgione Award (Venice) and the International Award for Color Environment Design (Stuttgart). Author of the Coloroid system, built on harmony thresholds, his book Color dynamics is used as a textbook in many universities of the world. He has more than 100 color constructions of facades and internal spaces, including color designs in Budapest for the Ferenc Lizst airport, the Metropolitan Railway, and the Castle District.
