AIC NEWSLETTER - DECEMBER 2023

AIC PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

As 2023 comes to a close, it also marks the end of my term as President, a term filled with rich experiences. While I had yet to complete everything I had hoped, we completed the process of AIC's move to Austria. Our new home, now securely in place, will enable the incoming Executive Committee to lead AIC into a renewed chapter full of exciting possibilities.

In addition, I couldn't think of a better way to end this year than attending the 2023 AIC Congress. This meeting reminded me what a remarkable organization AIC is. With the conference being the first face-to-face in three years, there is nothing comparable to attending a Mid-term Meeting or Congress to realize how much of a "family" we are, how well we welcome first-time attendees, and our deep dedication to research, supporting, and educating within our various disciplines, demonstrated by the higher than expected attendance and the number of submitted papers and posters.

As Immediate Past President, I look forward to supporting the new Executive Committee during the next two years.

Wishing you all a wonderful start to the new year,

Leslie Harrington, AIC President

AIC New Statute 2023

At the 2019 AIC General Assembly in Buenos Aires, it was voted that in compliance with the requests of Australian colleagues, the AIC's registered office could no longer remain in Australia, and the General Assembly gave the Executive Committee a mandate to find a new registered office and banking in a different Country. In compliance with Australian law, in June 2023, the qualified majority of AIC Regular Members voted for the dissolution of the "International Colour Association Inc." – Australia, which was officially closed in July 2023.

At the same time, the " International Colour Association - Multidisciplinary Association in the field of Colour, Multidisziplinäre Vereinigung auf dem Gebiet der Farben, Abkürzung AIC" was founded based in Vienna, Austria, in compliance with Austrian and EU laws, to find a definitive legal headquarters and banking for AIC, which continues its activities in the spirit of the founding fathers who laid their inspiration 56 years ago. The AIC General Assembly unanimously approved the new statute on November 30, 2023, at the AIC2023 15th Congress, Chiang Rai, Thailand.

AIC2023: Proceedings of the 15th Congress of the AIC

The Proceedings of the 15th Congress of the International Colour Association have been published on the AIC website.

The Color Society of Thailand appreciates all participants who contribute to the proceedings. The 1090-page proceedings contain 199 abstracts, 166 full papers, and 1 CADE award research paper from Clino Trini Castelli.

Clino Castelli's CADE Award lecture at AIC2023

Fifty years ago, Clino Castelli discerned that significant historical events often sparked transformative shifts in global colour languages. In the early 1970s, colour selection prioritised saturation over subjective hues, reaching maximum intensity, accentuated by the monochromatic trend from the '60s. This era saw a surge in intensely saturated primary colours, culminating in a colour fever in 1973. The subsequent "Color Fever Chroma Survey" in 1979 traced this peak, revealing a crisis in outdated quantitative colour selection methods. These rigid dynamics failed to adapt to evolving qualitative colour preferences, signifying the emergence of a new "colour sentiment".

Upcoming CRSC Events

January 23, 7pm Eastern: KALEIDOSCOPE LECTURE: My First Language: Lynne McIlvride Talks Around Colour, by Lynne McIlvride (Ontario Artist)

Colour is the first thing one notices when looking at Lynne McIlvrde's mixed media maximalist artwork. Although Lynne calls Colour her first language, she rarely talks about it; rarely in fact thinks about it. Do fish think about water? In this talk Lynne will attempt to put words around her use of colour while giving an illustrated talk about her artistic career. She will explore how colours interact in her work, and how her work has reflected her life.

February 13, 7pm Eastern: KALEIDOSCOPE LECTURE: The Power of Red - A Critical Look at Color Psychology, by John Seymour

Many of the estimated 700 million web pages on colour psychology pontificate on the psychological power of colour, and offer a list of specific colours and their presumed effect on our emotions and decision making. It is common for the authors to provide little by way of explanation for why, and absolutely nothing when it comes to description and citation of solid experimental evidence. How much of this pop psychology on colour is supported by solid experimentation? This webinar surveys the available literature on the psychology of the colour red, as a litmus test for the psychology of colours.

March 21, 7pm Eastern: AGM KEYNOTE: Out of the Blue? Colour as strategic tool in the built environment to engage with the community, by Udo Schliemann

The relationship between colour in branding, signage and building identification for cultural centres, public buildings and the workplace environment will be discussed. Colour is used strategically to 'speak'; to user groups in ways that words are not able to do. Colour is used as a communication tool to attract, to lower the threshold anxiety to enter a building and to create an association of identity. Udo is Principal Creative Director at Entro Communications in Toronto, a leading studio for branding, wayfinding and experiential design. Full details and registration coming soon to our website.
