A Renewed AIC: Highlights from 2024 and Hopes for 2025
|
|
|
As President of the International Colour Association – Multidisciplinary Association in the field of Colour, Multidisziplinäre Vereinigung auf dem Gebiet der Farben, Abkürzung AIC, it is my pleasure to share the achievements of 2024 and our aspirations for the coming year. This year has been transformative, marked by significant milestones that promise our association a stronger, more dynamic future.
We approved pivotal changes to our statutes during the Extraordinary General Assembly held on September 19, 2024, at the AIC Midterm Meeting Conference in São Paulo, Brazil. These amendments address Legal Compliance, adapting to updated regulations for non-profit organizations, Operational Coherence, aligning the statutes with the actual activities and scope of the AIC, better Role Refinement, separating the roles of Secretary and Treasurer to manage the increasing complexity of our global association’s operations, Member Inclusion, introducing a new category of Affiliated members, streamlining relationships with all member categories - Regular, Associate, Affiliated, and Individual - , official Recognition of AIC Study Groups, acknowledging the critical contributions of our Study Groups within the statutes, a new Editorial Oversight, establishing an official Editorial Committee (ECo) to manage the five core AIC publications: the Journal of the International Colour Association (JAIC), the AIC Annual Review, the AIC Newsletter, the Proceedings of the International Colour Association Conferences, and the website, and finally the most essential recognition of the AIC Internal Regulations, creating the statutory base of a unified set of operational procedures to guide all AIC activities and processes.
One of my key initiatives, the AIC Publishing Project, has begun to bear fruit. The AIC Annual Reviews (AICAR) and former AIC Annual Reports are now hosted on a dedicated website: https://www.aic-publishing.org/omp/. Developed using the Open Monograph Press platform by the Public Knowledge Project, this site centralizes our publications, enabling streamlined and efficient management. This shift underscores our mission to promote all aspects of color—scientific, artistic, cultural, historical, and professional — through accessible publications and conferences.
The AIC is a 100% volunteer-based organization. From the Executive Committee and Editorial Committee to the Conference Organizers and Study Group chairs, the dedication of our members ensures that the AIC’s events and resources remain accessible to students, retirees, and researchers from developing countries. For this reason, I would like to extend my heartfelt gratitude to the following individuals and groups for their invaluable contributions to the AIC community: Paula Csillag for organizing the AIC 2024 Midterm Meeting in São Paulo, Brazil. Vien Cheung, for her dedicated management of the Journal of the International Colour Association (JAIC) and the Proceedings of the International Colour Association (AIC) conferences over the years. Ingrid Calvo Ivanovic, thank you for revitalizing the AIC newsletter over the past two years. The chairs of the six AIC Study Groups, whose leadership has been instrumental in advancing our understanding of color, for the Study Group on Arts and Design (AD): Maria João Durão and David J. C. Briggs, for the Study Group on Colour Education (CE): Robert Hirschler and Maggie Maggio, for the Study Group on Colour Vision and Psychophysics (CVP): Shoji Sunaga and Chanprapha Phuangsuwan, for the new, founded in 2024, Study Group on Color in Games and Toys (CGT): Alessandro Rizzi and Andrea Siniscalco, for the Study Group on Environmental Colour Design (ECD): Verena M. Schindler and Juan Serra Lluch, for the Study Group on Language of Colour (LC): Dimitris Mylonas and Galina V. Paramei. Finally, all participants of the AIC 2024 Midterm Meeting Conference and those planning to attend the 16th AIC Congress in 2025 in Taipei. Your dedication and passion for the study of colour continue to inspire and drive our association forward.
As we approach 2025, I am filled with optimism. The renewed statutes, the Publishing Project, and the unwavering commitment of our volunteers lay the foundation for an exciting future. Together, we will continue to explore and celebrate the multifaceted world of colour.

AIC Executive Committee 2026-2027 Elections - Call for Nominations
The Elections for the AIC EC 2026-2027 term will be held during the AIC 2025 Congress General Assembly. The details regarding the AIC elections are specified in our Statutes and Guidelines for AIC Nomination Procedures. Before you send a nomination proposal, we recall here some main points:

Members of the AIC EC shall belong to one AIC Regular Member organization. The AIC EC must be such that no AIC Regular Member is represented by more than one person. The exception to this rule is the Past President.

The AIC EC is elected for a 2-year term from the beginning of the calendar year after the election (January 2026).
-
Nominations for the next AIC EC term must be made only, with the candidates' agreement, by the AIC EC or by AIC Regular Members. The AIC Regular Member organization presenting a nomination must have paid the 2025 annual fee to the AIC. The payment must have been received by the AIC no later than March 31, 2025, 8:00 p.m. UTC+0.

The candidate or any other person representing the candidate must not get involved in the endorsement process.
Duties Candidates Must Agree to Fulfill if Elected to the AIC EC:
All candidates must be available to assist with the running of AIC activities, including publications (Annual Reviews, Newsletters, Proceedings Series, JAIC and website), conferences (Midterm Meetings and Congresses), and International Colour Day. They must agree to attend all AIC EC meetings for the two years. In addition, regarding the different positions available in the AIC EC:

The candidate for Treasurer should have experience in sending invoices with PayPal and writing Financial Reports.
-
The candidate for Secretary should have experience in properly preparing minutes of meetings and managing the website; the resources necessary to oversee the publishing, storing, and mailing of AIC official documents.
-
The candidate for Vice President should have good administrative ability combined with excellent leadership characteristics and be very familiar with the objectives and all organisational aspects of the AIC, such as managing Judd, CADE, and Student Awards.
Available Positions for the AIC EC 2026-2027 Elections
One AIC EC 2024-2025 Ordinary Member, approved by the AIC EC, has expressed her option to stay for a second two-year term. She is Eva-Lena Bäckström, so we have five available positions for the AIC EC Elections:

One position for Vice-President

One position for Treasurer

Two positions for Ordinary EC members.
Nominations by the AIC EC and by AIC Regular Members
Nomination by the Executive Committee will be sent to AIC Regular Members no later than 4th March 2025.
Nominations by an AIC Regular Member organization must reach, by email (treasurer@aic-color.org), the AIC Secretary/Treasurer by May 4th, 2025, 8 pm UTC+0. The nomination must be sent by the AIC Regular Member organization President and must have two documents (in English language) attached:
- An acceptance letter, signed by the candidate, where s/he declares is ready, willing, and able to assume the duties and responsibilities of the office for which s/he is being nominated. Candidates must also indicate their acceptance to represent the nominating AIC Regular Member organization. The letter should also mention why the candidate wants to serve in their nominated position on the AIC EC.

The candidate's curriculum vitae illustrates the relevant skills and/or experience required to serve the chosen AIC EC position, including a colour photograph of the candidate.

AIC 2025 Awards: Deane B JUDD and CADE - Call for Nominations
Every other year, the AIC grants its Deane B JUDD Award to recognize work of international importance in the fields of colour perception, colour measurement, and/or colour technology; and its Colour Award in Art, Design, and Environment (CADE) to distinguish those who excel in the areas of art, design, architecture, and humanities.
The AIC invites nominations to be considered for 2025.
Nominations can be initiated by:
-
an individual or a group within an AIC Regular Member;
-
members of the current or immediate-past AIC Executive Committees;
-
an Individual Member;
-
past recipients of the Award, but those who make such a nomination should not serve on the Award Committee;
-
all nominations should be processed through a regular member and should have the support of that organization.
Each nomination should consist of the following:
-
a statement of up to one A4 page outlining the nominee’s contributions;
-
a curriculum vitae with the nominee’s contact information, important biographical facts (i.e., education degrees with years), membership affiliations, list of publications, awards they may have received in the past from other colour organisations, etc.
Should you need it, guidelines for both awards can be reviewed on the AIC website together with previous recipients for JUDD and CADE.
Nominations should be sent to the AIC Vice-President by the regular members’ representatives to the AIC or by their presidents no later than February 15, 2025, by email.

Study Group on Colour Education (SGCE)
Colour Literacy Forum Series 2025 - 'Facts and Myths about Colour'
The Colour Literacy Project is kicking off its next Forum series, 'Facts and Myths about Colour' on the 1st of March 2025. In this series, we shall explore the plethora of misconceptions about colour that are abundant in textbooks (even those published by prestigious editors) and articles published in scientific and popular journals, magazines and - first and foremost - on the Internet. Many of these misconceptions have already been briefly addressed by the Colour Literacy Project: in this series they will be discussed in more detail by our invited speakers.
This series will start with Forum 11, titled Colour Misconceptions and Their Impact in the Classroom, will explore the history and consequences of widely held misconceptions about colour in art education. The event begins with an introductory talk by Robert Hirschler, who will trace the origins of these misconceptions, focusing on the flawed idea of a universal colour theory capable of explaining the complexity of colour. He will also examine persistent myths that continue to influence teaching. In the second part, Andreas Schwarz will present insights from his extensive research on colour education for art students, as detailed in his pioneering book COLOUR COMPETENCE: Orientation Aids for a Didactic Approach to Colour in Art Lessons (not yet available in English). Schwarz argues that these misconceptions are not trivial errors but detrimental obstacles to the creative growth of art students.

Study Group on Environmental Colour Design (SG ECD)
New Project: Call for Papers AREA Special Issue on Colour in Architecture, Design, and Urbanism
All disciplines involved in the creation and transformation of the habitable environment engage with light and colour in some way. The impact of the use of light, colour, and materials in contemporary design activity, especially in the age of advanced technological developments, deserves to be explored within the academic field regarding techniques, design practices, architecture, and urban space. We invite authors to submit original articles. Please find subsequently a non-exhaustive list of potential topics:

Psychological aspects and influences of light and colour stimuli in the habitat.

Meanings and preferences of colour in spaces, objects, and designed media.

Historical evolution of concepts and theories of colour and light in relation to the human environment.

Colour systems and codes used in architecture and design.

History, archaeology, and practices of colour restoration in urban centres.

Meanings of chromatic materials in different design disciplines.

Language: The main language of the journal is Spanish, although original articles in Portuguese and English are also accepted.

Next CSA webinar and CSA national conference "Colour Matrix, Sydney 2025"
On Monday, February 24 Prof. Stephen Westland and Maggie Maggio will discuss their recent book "The Universal Principles of Colour, One Hundred Colour Concepts Explained", in another webinar organized by our "Canberra Colour Club".
Additionally, an open Call for Abstracts will be issued shortly for our hybrid online/in-person national conference "Colour Matrix Sydney 2025" from October 31 to November 2. Italy - GdC - Associazione Italiana Colore
CCSJ Special Issue on Design and Fashion Design: A Chromatic History Deadline for full papers: May 31, 2025.
Guest Editor Prof. Raimonda Riccini: full professor in design, design historian, founder and past president of the Italian Association of Design Historian-AIS/Design, and past president of the Italian Society of Design-SID.
In design and fashion, colour has always played a central and significant role in many respects. It is enough to recall the characterising role of colour in industrial products, both from the point of view of sales strategies and corporate identity and from that of user perception and usability; the contribution of colour to interaction processes, but also those of signification, communication and graphic and visual systems; not to mention the relevance of the colour component in the study and use of materials, from fabrics to natural and polymeric materials. No less significant is the contribution that the study of colour has made and continues to make to design education and didactics, starting from the great lessons of the VkHutemas, the Bauhaus, the New Bauhaus and the School of Ulm, which have built an indispensable grammar and syntax, valid even in the face of the transition from analogue to digital. Finally, the contribution that designers, sometimes implicitly, have made to construct a theory and culture of colour in design is particularly rich.
However, until now, there has been no reflection on the role that colour has historically played in the fields of product, fashion, and communication, as well as concerning the changes brought about by electronics and the digital. This special issue explores the multifaceted relationship between design and colour throughout the 20th century. The essays are expected to reconstruct this relationship from a historical perspective in the different fields of interest.

XIX Color Conference: Exploring Multidisciplinary Dimensions of Colour
The XIX Color Conference, organized by the GdC – Associazione Italiana del Colore, was held online on November 28–29, 2024. Experts and enthusiasts gathered to discuss advancements in color science and its applications. Topics included color measurement, digital innovations, lighting, and cultural heritage conservation. Keynotes featured Vien Cheung on "Colour Association," Phil Green on "Extended Colour Gamut Reproduction," and Robin Kingsburgh on "Colour in Art and Science."

3rd International Conference on Colour Photography and Film: A Resounding Success
The 3rd international conference on “Colour Photography and Film: Analysis, Preservation, and Conservation of Analogue and Digital Materials” took place in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, on September 12–13, 2024. Part of the DREAM-Film project, it followed two successful editions in 2021 and 2022. The 2024 hybrid conference brought professionals together to discuss the preservation, restoration, and digital migration of color photographs and films. Keynotes included Monica Marchesi on reprinting in photographic conservation and Elif Rongen-Kaynakçi on restoring silent cinema colors. A playful early detection of color deficiencies
The Italian Ministry of University and Research has financed a project called Game4Ced (Gamification for color blindness early detection) which aims to design board games to be used in primary school classes to discover as soon as possible the presence of color blind children and, at the same time, to raise awareness among teachers about what color blindness is and how to manage it in the classroom.
This project will therefore develop a series of color-based print and play games that will be available to anyone who requests.
This project is one of the activities of the newly formed AIC study group on color in games and toys.

Switzerland - pro colore
Guided tour through the exhibition Ragamala - Pictures for All Senses

The extraordinary exhibition at Museum Rietberg is dedicated to Ragamala, a jewel of Indian miniature painting. In the 15th century, artists at Indian royal courts began to express music visually in their paintings. The melodies were associated with certain moods and depicted as human characters based on verses from poems. What colours speak of love, pain, melancholy and longing?

Angela Wright
Angela Wright (1939–2024), building on the foundations laid by those before her, took the understanding of colour psychology to a new level, uncovering the deep and often overlooked ways in which colour influences human emotion and behaviour. She decoded the universal language of colour through her Colour Affects theory, making it accessible, understandable, and usable. By focusing on the unconscious effects of colour, Angela offered new insights into how colour shapes our moods, decisions, and lives in ways we often do not realise.
Her ground-breaking theory proposed that colours are not merely aesthetic but carry intrinsic psychological effects—effects as consistent as they are transformative. Her work, confirmed by mathematical analysis in the early 1990s, proved that the harmonious interplay of colours could mirror and influence human personality and behaviour. She brought this to life with her seminal book, The Beginner’s Guide to Colour Psychology, a work that continues to resonate, guiding readers in using colour to transform their lives and spaces.
Beyond her writings, Angela’s London-based consultancy, Colour Affects, became a trusted resource for those seeking to understand the subtle power of colour in branding, design, and personal expression. Her teachings have inspired countless designers, artists, and thinkers, reshaping environments from corporate offices to family homes. Her legacy is one of insight and empowerment, reminding us that colour is not just seen but felt—woven into the fabric of our being.
Those who had the privilege of knowing her speak of Angela's generosity, wisdom, and ability to connect ideas with people. Angela Wright’s legacy endures, living on through the many design professionals and creatives she inspired and supported, continuing to colour the world in ways we are only beginning to understand.
